5 Reasons Why More Women Are Doing Maternity Sessions (And Why You Should Too)

Maternity Session | Smithfield, Rhode Island

There’s nothing more gorgeous to me than a pregnant woman. Having had three children of my own, I can tell you first hand that I never saw myself as beautiful when I was pregnant. I felt uncomfortable and large, but every time I saw a picture of myself, I was radiant. I expect that you probably feel the same. Knowing as I do what goes into getting ready for your little one, I expect that as you prepare for the arrival of your new baby, you have a to-do list that’s a mile long! From getting the nursery ready to packing your bag for the hospital, there’s just so much to do. If you have other children, let’s just tack on a thousand more things to consider.

Celebrate the anticipation and joy

There are those unicorn women amongst us that feel amazing during pregnancy while others (like me) deal with a lot of discomfort and body issues. By the time child three arrived for me, I was ready to through my whole body away! To say being pregnancy was tough for me is putting things mildly. That being said, I relished the sensation of being pregnant because of how it made me feel mentally and emotionally. Regardless of how you feel, working with a professional photographer for your maternity session can help you love your everything about your body and let you feel powerful and beautiful. Pregnancy is an incredible, sacred time in your life, and these special moments before you welcome your new little one into the world are moments you will want to remember for years to come. Why not have some professional images taken to celebrate these feelings before you forget them?

Reflect on your journey

Maternity photos don’t just have to be about mom either. If you’re in a relationship, these photographs are a wonderful way to capture the next chapter in your story as a couple. Families today are diverse and are represented in a myriad of ways. These sessions give you an opportunity to reminisce about how your relationship with your partner started and how far you’ve come as you look into what the future may hold for your family. Whether this is your first child or your fourth, a maternity session can help you honor the love that started it all and celebrate how you’ve grown together.

Capture this moment in time

Life as you know it is about to change in a big way, and before you know it, the present moment will be nothing more than a memory. Again, whether this be your first child or fifth child, you are about to have a new member added to your clan! A new force to reckon with, a new person to get to know. Before your family changes to welcome its newest member, you should take time to enjoy and celebrate where you are now. This session honors the family path you had and freezes in time it’s current form. This is an added bonus, as when you have images of your family as it grows, you can look back on those photos in the years to come and watch the way you all have changed.

Have fun with older siblings

An unexpected bonus of a maternity session is that it can be a fun family photography session as well. It can give your other children a chance to mug for the camera, be silly and have fun. You can make it even more special by having your older children write and read letters to the new baby during the session. What are they looking forward to with a younger sibling? What games do they want to teach the baby? Is there a secret path by your home that’s the absolute best for imaginary play? These are all the special moments that can become a part of your session and make it truly memorable. As you know, new babies require a lot of attention, so why not ensure your older children have some time in the spotlight? Including older siblings in your maternity photos can make them feel more involved in your pregnancy journey—and more excited for their new sibling to arrive.

Feel gorgeous for a day

Now, I don’t need to tell you - sharing your body with someone else for 9-10 months who keeps growing thus changing the size of your body, is not the most comfortable thing in the world. From the clothes that don’t fit to your discomfort, pregnancy doesn’t always make you feel beautiful, plus it does a number on your wardrobe budget. A professional maternity photography session can be a reminder of just how gorgeous you are and how amazing your body is AND has become. After all, you’re growing a human being, and that’s truly incredible! Use your maternity photos as an excuse to get pampered with a haircut, a mani-pedi, massage…heck girl, go all out and get professional makeup done. Get all the way dressed up. When you see your images, you may be surprised by how stunning you look.
